Elkton is a small town nestled on the doorstep of the Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive to the east and Massanutten Peak to the west. It sports a picturesque backdrop of gorgeous mountain views. The South Fork of the Shenandoah River snakes through and around the town adding to Elkton’s rustic charm.
Elkton has a rich local history as the first permanent settlement west of the Blue Ridge. During the Civil War it was General Stonewall Jackson’s headquarters for his Shenandoah Valley campaign. The Jennings House, site of the makeshift hospital during the war, still stands today. Elkton was incorporated in 1908 and now has around 2900 residents. Major corporations in the area are Merck and the Miller Coors Brewery.
Highlights of things to do in Elkton include shopping at SoLace Studios (art & gifts store), going on a guided wilderness horseback trail ride at Mountaintop Ranch, visiting the museum of local history, canoeing, tubing, or picnicking at Stonewall Riverside Park, or simply relaxing at one of the town’s restaurants after taking advantage of the many outdoor activities available nearby in the National Park or at Massanutten Resort.
